HR, as I understand, permaculture principles state that a flat floor is not a good use of light and space. If you look at a wood, you will see trees, bushes / shrubs, and grasses and plants lower down. There is not just one layer.

Me too. I'm composting all my organic waste now, it seems like such a waste to throw it away when you know what it's capable of
