Subject: People are forever telling me I don't look 69 years old ...

... I've discovered why.

(I often reply: "You are looking from the outside in ... you should see it from the inside, looking out!". But, I won't need to say that any more).

We say: "Time flies, when you're having fun".

But 'Time' doesn't 'fly'. It can't. It's not a bird.

What that means is: Time SEEMS TO ALMOST STAND STILL ... when you're doing something you are utterly engrossed in.

(I once nearly set my kitchen on fire, by being engrossed in what I was doing on my computer).

For a large portion of my life, I worked (professionally) as a Computer Programmer/Analyst. And I was completely engrossed in it. It would get to 2:00am, and I'd still be at the office, puzzling over some "computer bug".

And it would seem like "Only a few hours" to me.

Well ... apparently ... it WAS "Only a few hours" as far as me AGEING ... even though ... in 'normal time' ... I'd been at it for 14 hours or so.

But I only AGED a few hours. The 'time' that was apparent to me.

Apparently, that's the way it works.

And, funnily enough, I know someone else like that. He was born the same year as me (1944), and works as an Engineer. That's another profession that really 'engrosses' someone. And he doesn't look '69' either (full head of hair, etc. etc. Still beats all comers at Squash. There's a saying ... which I just invented: "Old Engineers never die ... they just lose the thread")

So there. Get engrossed in what you are really good at doing ... and you can slow down your ageing process.
